MySQL Consulting

I find out why your MySQL database is slow and tell you exactly what to change.

Slow queries, missing indexes, InnoDB configuration, and MySQL 8 upgrades. RDS, Cloud SQL, or self-hosted MySQL 5.7 and 8.x, and MariaDB.

Fixed price. Written report with a prioritized fix list and expected impact, delivered in one week.

What the audit covers

  1. Read the slow query log and Performance Schema to find the queries that cost the most in total, not just the slowest single run.
  2. Run EXPLAIN and EXPLAIN ANALYZE (ANALYZE on MariaDB) on those queries to see the plan the optimizer chose and where it goes wrong.
  3. Check indexes against how your application actually reads the data: missing, unused, and duplicate indexes.
  4. Review InnoDB buffer pool size, connection limits, and other settings against your real workload.
  5. Write a report: each problem, the exact change to make, and the expected effect, ordered by impact.

Getting off MySQL 5.7

MySQL 5.7 reached end of life in October 2023. I help you choose between MySQL 8.x and MariaDB, check your schema and queries for what will break (collations, GROUP BY, authentication, JSON), and plan the move.

Implementing the fixes

If you want help after the audit, I can make the changes with your team: index migrations, query rewrites, configuration changes. Scoped and priced separately.

Managed MySQL limits

RDS and Cloud SQL restrict which settings you can change and when. Recommendations account for parameter groups, flags, and maintenance windows.

Frequently asked questions

How is MySQL consulting priced?

The performance audit is fixed-price and delivered in one week. Implementation work after the audit is scoped and quoted separately.

How does payment work?

50% to start, 50% when the report is delivered. A one-page agreement covers scope and dates. You can pay by bank transfer or card.

What do you need from us?

Read-only access to the database or its metrics, the slow query log (or permission to enable it), the schema, and a short call about which parts of the application feel slow.

Do you work with RDS MySQL and Cloud SQL?

Yes. The diagnosis is the same as self-hosted MySQL. The fixes differ because managed services limit which settings you can change and when.

Do you work with MariaDB?

Yes. The audit is the same: slow query log, query plans, indexes, and InnoDB settings. MariaDB has drifted from MySQL in its optimizer, replication, and some SQL features, so recommendations account for the version you run.

Can you help us upgrade from MySQL 5.7 to 8 or MariaDB?

Yes. 5.7 is end of life. I help you pick MySQL 8.x or MariaDB, review your schema and queries for what will break on the one you choose, and plan the order of the move.
